PART TWENTY-ONE

"THE STORY"

BY UMORU PRAISE

Malia dropped the phone after speaking to Mrs. Ambrose who called to check up on her

She went over to the drawer beside her bed. She opened the last drawer. She removed all the surface objects and gazed at the gift she had hide for months since she was given. The writing was still clearly engraved ‘To Malia’

She breathed heavily and took it out. She sat on the bed, slowly removing the wrapper. She saw a tiny box and a letter inside.

She opened the tiny box and saw a beautiful necklace with Frankie engraved on it. She was stunned to see it. She kept the necklace aside and took the letter to read

“To my dear Malia,

I couldn’t talk to you before leaving permanently but I didn’t want to just go like that. You above all people deserve an explanation and an apology. An explanation about the cause of my death and why I had to leave without telling you about it. I hope you forgive me for not telling you about my illness, you should understand why, because I know you are doing the very thing I didn’t want to see in your eyes (crying). I have skin cancer and since I couldn’t do anything about it, I wanted to commit suicide at first, you know (laughs) how stupid of me right (how could I think of committing suicide when I haven’t even come across an angel like you). You better not blush, because I know this is where you do your awwnn (laughs). You made me laugh from my heart the very first time I came in contact with you, so you couldn’t expect me to make you cry(heck no).

Okay let’s stop being emotional now, it’s making me hungry. I hope you like my little present, I didn’t want to leave without leaving something behind. I know how much you love necklaces, so I thought of it as the best gift. I engraved your nickname for me instead of your name, because I didn’t want you to forget me so easily. And oh, it shines and sparkles more when in fire (wink). I wanted you to have the best.

Thank you Malia, for making me have a reason to exhaust my remaining days fully. For making me see a reason to laugh, to be active, to be creative (and oh, before I forget, I hope you got my other gift, I got much better at it thanks to you). Jeremy is lucky to have you. He is a good guy and I wouldn’t be more confident on who to leave you with.

Take good care of yourself, and please, stop being a bully, I still can’t forget what you did to the girl at the library. Remember the last time we saw her at the cafeteria, she literally ran away at the sight of us (laughs).

 Be good.

With so much love,

From your innocent, sweet, cute and lovely,

Frankie.”

Malia noticed her tears had already wet half of the letter. She tearfully took out the necklace, she went over to the mirror and wore it. Her tears streamed down profusely as she gazed at the portrait he made of her through the mirror reflection…

…I miss you Frankie…

Look out for the Bonus Chapter…
